Life is a learning curve, full of lessons which tend to change our perception of things and help us make better choices as we grow. At 30 years old, one is assumed to have a wealth of experience in various life situations ranging from finance, relationships and business that have in one way or the other shaped his life. This is why I asked young professionals over 35 years to share life lessons you ought to know before you hit the big 3-0.

1. Learn about finances:

You should know how to manage your finances so you can live a debt free life. Save part of your income and always live within your means. It is wise to follow the 80-20 rule, which is simply spend 80% and save 20% of your income.

2.  Invest your time and money:

Invest your time and money wisely. Find out which financial investment plan works for you and watch your money work for you. Also invest your time in family, love, charity and educating yourself.

3. Do not depend on anyone:

Nobody owes you anything in this world so don’t depend on anyone. If you want to be successful, you have to work hard for it because nobody is going to hand it to you.

4. Pursue your dreams:

It is one thing to have a dream but it is better to pursue it. There will be a lot of negative people trying to bring you down but that should only motivate you to succeed.

5. Set life goals:

Successful people set goals for their lives and they do well to achieve them. Setting goals makes it easy to know how far you have come in life and how far you have to go.

6. Learn to live:

Enjoy life as it comes. Learn from your mistakes and embrace the positives. It is all part of the learning process.

7. Learn to love:

It is okay to fall in love. Sometimes finding the right partner can change your life for the better.

8. Be happy with who you are:

You have to love yourself. Embrace your flaws and be happy with who you are. After all, you are made in the image of your Creator!

9. Have no regrets:

Have no regrets in life. See all bad situations as valuable lessons and make sure you don’t repeat them.

10. Be kind:

You can’t compromise on kindness. Be kind to all people and treat everyone with respect. You will never know when you would need anyone’s help.

11. There’s no rush in life:

Life is not a race and there is definitely no rush but that should not make you lazy. Work hard and everything will fall in place eventually.

12. learn how to network:

Wherever you find yourself make valuable contact with people. Your next job or that big break you are looking for might depend on it.

13. It is never too late to start over:

Life is not a straight road. If things are not working out, don’t be afraid to start again. Most successful people failed several times in life before they had success. Fear will only limit your abilities greatly.

14. Your health is important:

Don’t sacrifice your health for anything. Eat well, exercise regularly and keep your body clean to keep you healthy at all times. Health is wealth.

15. You will lose friends:

Losing friends is part of growing up. As you grow, the kind of company you keep changes so don’t worry if you lose people you grew up with because you will make new friends to replace them.

16. Never lose hope:

While some people might have it easy, life in itself is full of ups and downs. Embrace the journey and make the best out of every situation. Once there is life, there is hope!

17. Your past doesn’t determine your future:

Don’t let your past prevent you from building the future you want. Your future is determined only by what you do today.

18. It is okay to not have it all figured out:

Sometimes we think we need to know it all or have it all figured out. That should not be the case. Good things take time so be patient and remember that Rome was not built in a day.

19. University is overrated:

There are so many examples of people who did not finish or even go to the university but made it in life. Educate yourself and don’t depend on only what you learn in school.

20. Read, read, read!!!:

Read wide and most importantly read books and articles that will build you up intellectually.

21. No one will help you:

You have to help yourself!
